I don't even want to be around anymore.

A 2021 year-end review curated by @adamrozett

The Rundown

Look, I did this whole rigmarole last year.

We're in calendar year three of a fucking pandemic of the absolute stupidest people on the planet. My patience was paper thin to begin with, so let's pile the anti-vax bodies high and I'll be the first to try and jump it on my bike.

In the meantime, have a look at the media that I think needs some recognition. I became a father this year and still had time to watch more tv, critique more movies and listen to more music than you. If I didn't do it, then who would tell you what's good?

Television

Here are my favorite series from 2021.

How to with John Wilson (HBO) - It's not a new series, but it's still the best show on tv. It's on season two and you're still not watching? 'How to throw out your batteries' is a standout episode.

Reservation Dogs (FX) - Notable in that it features all Indigenous writers and directors, along with an almost entirely Indigenous North American cast and production team. Beyond its voice that is desperately needed in television, is the fact that it runs the full gamut of being funny, sweet, sad and a definitely weird.

Saturday Morning All Star Hits! (Netflix) - I've been singing Kyle Mooneys praises for years and this is just another project to shore up the fact that he's great (also the movie he wrote, Brigsby Bear). This series nails the early 90's Saturday morning cartoon look with hosting and editing to match. Serious adult themes leak their way in to form a twisted alternate view of your childhood.

Hacks (HBO Max) - Ten minutes into the first episode I said out loud 'just mail Jean Smart an EMMY now' - and what do you know, she won that shit. Hannah Einbinder in her first series role is a stand out as well.

Ten Year Old Tom (HBO) - You either love Steve Dildarians type of work, or you don't and this isn't a big jump from his previous series 'The Life and Times of Tim'. If you like to watch a ten-year-old act like a piece of crap - while the supporting cast of adults is just as bad, this just might be the show for you.

Yellowjackets (Showtime) - Having not finished this yet (the finale airs the day I'm writing this), there is plenty of time for it to derail and not stick the landing. What I've seen so far has been good and a fun take on time jumping. The casting is great and it's about time someone paired up Juliette Lewis and Christina Ricci.

Midnight Mass (Netflix) - Creator Mike Flanagans previous work is what I like to call 'Spooky House' and it's a genre of horror that I can't stand. In addition, I'm not a big fan of religious themed horror either. I'm glad I gave this one a shot because its subtle use of CG and not so subtle practical make-up, actually showing and not just telling and ramping bonkerness episode to episode really worked for me.

... More Television

A couple more for good measure.

  • Loki (Disney+)
  • Station Eleven (HBO Max)
  • Mayor of Kingstown (Paramount+)
  • Girls5eva (Peacock)

Film

Admittedly I'm a little behind on films this year with Titane, Licorice Pizza, Saint Maude, Lamb, C'mon C'mon, The Power of the Dog, and Last Night In Soho to name just a few still in my queue.

Pig - My favorite film of the year. A tremendous and weird story of the mess and mystery of loss. If you disparagingly talk about Nicolas Cage and his recent work, it tells me everything I need to know about you.

The Green Knight - Every frame is visually a treat. The story and journey move like molasses, but I found it very rewardingly told.

Zola - The film is based on a Twitter thread because of course that's a thing. It's got a look, a vibe and a sound that makes it work. Bonus, Cousin Greg is in it.

Dune - They nailed the size and scope of the universe. The script keeps a lot in the background, so some core Dune knowledge is helpful to appreciate the narrative. I'm not sure how you execute it any better though.

Candyman - As a sequel it covers the bases and loose ends from the original well and ties in some very timely conversations about gentrification and race. There are some good kills and visuals as well.

Reading

Sellout: The Major-Label Feeding Frenzy That Swept Punk, Emo, and Hardcore (1994–2007) - As someone who is obsessed with music, its history and its creation - this book really was created in a laboratory for me. I'd like to think this is the exact book I would have written in an alternative universe.

The Nice House on the Lake (DC Comics) - A group of some friends, some strangers but all acquaintances of a man named Walter are invited to a very nice house on a lake. The reason for the get together is revealed in shocking fashion and the mystery only continues from there.

Ultramega (Image / Skybound Comics) - A cosmic plague has spread, transforming everyday people into violent, monstrous kaiju. Only the Ultramega—three individuals imbued with incredible powers—hold the line against this madness. Their battles level cities and leave untold horror in their wake. James Harren is one of my absolute favorite comic artists and this is just a fun giant monsters fighting book.

The Six Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton (Image / Skybound Comics) - The world’s most unlikable action star has been found dead, and his previous TV sidekicks are looking to solve the mystery. But how can you catch a murderer when almost everyone hates the victim?

Music

TUNE is a curated playlist of the best new music from 2021. I don't pick bands from past mixtapes - so, sorry Turnstile you already made the cut a few years ago. If you're looking for more from seasons past - find more mixes here.

This Shit Sucks

NFTs - Insufferably bad art, sold in a scam fashion where you don't own any actual rights (most of the time) - sounds pretty fucking stupid if you ask me. Here's a quick breakdown with more specifics why it all sucks.

Y: The Last Man (FX) - After multiple failed starts and complete recastings, it's not a huge surprise that this just didn't work. Working against it is the fact that it felt like so many other shows dealing with similar material, even though Y: The Last Man source material did it first. As one of my absolute favorite comic series it was unfortunate to see it miss the mark and just feel so wrongly executed.

This Shit Rules

Trey Parker & Matt Stone - They signed a 935 million dollar deal with ViacomCBS that has South Park running through 2027 and 14 Original Movies On Paramount+. Also in a major meta move they started the paperwork to buy Casa Bonita from bankruptcy. The almost billion dollar deal on top of their previous $300 million dollar deals and studio ownership make them two of the most powerful people in entertainment who don't answer to anyone but themselves. Respect that authoritah.

Maxton Elliot - The world might continue to be on fire with not much hope in sight, but this year did offer up my greatest and proudest accomplishment. Nothing has been cooler watching this little dude grow up. Luckily he's also been a good sport when it comes to things like wearing my custom made Mad Max costume for Halloween. Max and I will be roaming the wastelands together and we'll see you in 2022.

Ignore me all over the internet

You made it to the end, I'm impressed. Let me know what you were into in 2021 or if you found something new from this years breakdown that you enjoyed.
