The Rundown

Here we go again. Another year, another round-up.

Don't forget 2020, 2021 or 2022

Television

Here are my favorite series and episodes from 2023.

Everyone Else Burns (Channel 4) - British series focusing on a puritanical Christian family who are biding their time until the rapture whisks them away. Christianity may be part of the joke, but it's really just a family learning about each other and the world around them while trying to adapt. There's a lot of growing up to do here for everyone involved.

How to with John Wilson (HBO) - This show would make the cut for eternity if it ran that long. Unfortunately, or fortunately for people like me who believe shows should end sooner than later, we got three remarkable seasons of a man with a tape loaded in his camera and a nasally voice show us how to really understand and live in this insane world.

Standout Episode: S03E04 - How to Watch the Game

Jury Duty (Freevee) - Part reality, part hoax but overall just an endearing show. An unwitting participant named Ronald is selected for jury duty unaware that the entire trial is fake. James Marsden plays his famous self and the remaing cast just walking the line selling the entire premise. By the end, I garauntee you'll be smiling.

Poker Face (Peacock) - It's not a new comparison, but Poker Face is a modern Columbo case-of-the-week show. Natasha Lyonne is always doing her own thing and this showcases her perfectly. The cases are fun, the overarching plot lingers but doesn't get in the way. While shot digitally, it looks great. It's warm, there is grain, distortion, halation, and gate weave. It completely understands replicating traditional film and eschews the underexposed blue mess trend (Ozark).

Reservation Dogs (FX) - I don't see how this show won't stay in my top 5 of all time. As much as I'll miss it, it accomplished everything it needed to while remaining something special the entire run. It's easy to be bad, it's hard to be a warrior with dignity.

Scavengers Reign (MAX) - Adult animated sci-fi, in this economny? This absolutely blew me away. Set in a world with an art style that looks completely inspired by Moebius. The world is a dangerous character, but if you listen close enough it just might save you.

Blue Eye Samurai (Netflix) - More adult animation operating at the highest level of television? Yup. Once I started I had to binge and consume every bloody ounce as quickly as possible. It might be simple to call it a revenge story, but it goes so much deeper than that and you'll just need to experience it for yourself.

The Bear (FX) - Good lord. Pick an episode. 'Honeydew' when Marcus goes to Copenhagen to level up his pastry game. Or 'Fishes' when you witness the most insane Christmas dinner of all time. Or 'Forks' when Richie... he polishes the forks, man. What a show.

The Last of Us (HBO) - We've done video game adaptations. We've done post-apocalyptic dramas. We've grown tired of them all. This one is different, this one is working. I haven't played the games, but I know what lies ahead and as much as I like it, I'm gonna hate it. Soldier on.

What We Do In the Shadows - S05E04 - The Campaign (FX) - The Supreme Council of Energy Vampires is a real murderers' row of very specific comedians. Jo Firestone. Gregg Turkington. Hannibal Buress. Martha Kelly. Aparna Nancherla. This scene was created in a laboratory for me and I could watch an entire spin-off of this.

Barry - S04E03 (HBO) - When Hans Zimmer Rain Man theme drops, I was dying. No one can accuse this show of following a conventional path to it's conclusion. I'm still on the fence overall, but when moments hit in this show - they. fucking. hit.

Telemarketers (HBO) - A true crime doc following office workers who stumble upon the truth of their telemarketing center and want to expose the industry. Long live Pat Pespas.

... More Television

A couple more for good measure.

  • Sucession Final Season (HBO)
  • Slow Horses (Apple TV+)
  • The Other Two (HBO Max)

Film

Still playing catch up and a lot to see still but here are some stand outs.

Poor Things - Yorgos Lanthimos was already one of my favorite directors so this was my most anticipated movie for 2023 and it didn't disappoint. It's a masterful look into a womans agency in a world that you can't look away from. Re-housed lenses that were developed in the 1840's were used to give many scenes a look with some out of this world swirly bokeh. Others with a heavier fisheye than a 90's skate video.

Blackberry - As if I wasn't going to watch anything with Matt Johnson's name attached. When it comes to the endless stream of "Brand" films this year (Air, Tetris, Flamin' Hot, The Beanie Bubble), this one stood the tallest for me. Props to Glenn Howerton for absolutely fully sending it.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - Simply put these are the pinnacle of animated movies and so far are batting two-for-two.

Anatomy of a Fall - French. Legal. Drama. Thriller. Sandra Hüller's best actress nom is very well deserved. Also, nominate the kid and the dog and the Steel-Band 50 Cent Cover of P.I.M.P.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - This one was just a lot of fun. Movies should be fun.

The Holdovers - It's great seeing Giamatti get recognized for his work here, same with Da'Vine Joy Randolph who just breaks your heart while making you laugh out loud. It convincingly looks and feels like something from 1970. Just well done.

... More Movies

What more can be said about these...

  • Oppenheimer
  • Barbie
  • The Iron Claw
  • Godzilla Minus One
  • Past Lives
  • The Zone of Interest

Reading

Stringer (Image) - 1983. Tournament tennis. A racquet stringer turned small-time drug dealer gets in over his head transporting a gym bag of cocaine across Europe. Carrying a half-million in narcotics puts him on the radar of every dangerous man on the continent. Whoops.

This Shit Rules

NFT bros blinding themselves - Big time dorks buy lamps that emit ultraviolet light for their idiot NFT event and cause severe eye and skin injuries because they're too stupid to know better. LOL.

Henry Kissinger Dying - Rot in hell you evil shit bag.

OceanGate - This entire debacle was entirely avoidable. Yet the rich keep entertaining us by doing absolutely dumb stuff.

Boston Bruins - Despite the greatest regular NHL season of all time, the Boston Bruins lost in the first round of the playoffs, in an OT Game 7 no less. They took this record from my beloved Detroit Red Wings. They deserve this pain and suffering because they are the Boston Bruins.

Copslide - LOL. LMAO.

Ignore me all over the internet

Thanks for reading. Until next year.
