A 2024 year-end review curated by @adamrozett

The Rundown

I've got two kids now and still do this. What's your excuse?

Don't forget 2020, 2021, 2022 or 2023

@adamrobot

Some standout television from 2024.

English Teacher (FX) - This show came straight out the of the gate fully formed while Brian Jordan Alvarez managed to convert his goofy TikTok presence into creating a tv show. The characters really didn't need any time to develop or stew, just got right to it. It's nice to see the teachers barely tolerating high school kids since they actually just suck ass.

John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in LA (Netflix) - It's definitely a fresh approach for a talk show and I'm not sure it even worked most of the time - but I was a fan of the effort regardless. Airing live on Netflix for six episodes with sidekick Richard Kind (sure?), the chaos and unknowablity where things were headed was fun. The uniquely shot intro and amazing accompaning theme song (Wang Chung - To Live and Die in L.A.) is something to behold as well.

Shōgun (FX) - A historical drama of epic proportions where weapons are barely unsheathed and English barely spoken. Many, many words make this slow burn work to a very satisfying degree. The cinematogrphy and attention to detail is hardly matched in television.

X-men '97 (Disney+) - A revival of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1997), this picks up a year after and just cooks the entire way through. The chance to cover updated modern topics from the lens of these characters really does work quite well and the stakes are fairly high through-out the series.

The Curse (Showtime) - Created and written by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie (both starring as well) with recent Best Actress winner Emma Stone. The series explores "How an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring on their problematic new HGTV show, Fliplanthropy." On the technical side of the show, when Nathan and Emma are shown in their real life documented world - it's grainy high-ISO upscaled 1080p footage. When it comes time to show the "Flipanthropy" footage in crystal clear 4k it's a noticably jarring and stark contrast. Much like the characters they represent in real life vs television. Not in a million years could you guess how this show ends. (Technically this premiered November 2023 but ended 2024).

The Day of the Jackal (Peacock) - A ruthless British assassin known as the "Jackal" and an intelligence officer intent on capturing him. Some clever spycraft and a fun cat and mouse game.

Always playing catch up but here's some of the good stuff I've seen so far. Still on the to see list - The Brutalist, The Last Showgirl, Nosferatu, The Shrouds, A Different Man, A Real Pain, The Outrun, Cuckoo and Nickel Boys.

Anora (dir. Sean Baker) - The Flordia Project is one of my all time favorite films, so I'm always looking forward to his work. This may not have reached those highs, but he always does so much with such a small ship. Fleshing out characters quickly and making some absurd environments feel real this reaches those marks easily. Mikey Madison always kind of drove me insane on Better Things (FX), but I'm on board now. This is the first of many on my list of movies featuring some aspect of female agency. Sorry Ani.

MaXXXine (dir. Ti West) - Concluding the X trilogy in slick 80's pastiche form. MaXXXine makes it to Hollywood to find success while being targeted by a mysterious killer. It's got some fun moments and Mia Goth has certinaly earned the title of current Horror Queen.

Rap World (dir. Danny Scharar, Conner O’Malley) - Conner O'Malley is currently the funniest person on the planet (for me). Whatever it is he is doing, which is many weird and niche things they just hit for me every time. Rap World follows four friends living in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania documenting their attempt to record a rap album over the course of one eventful night. Steven Speilberg with unlimited funds couldn't make a movie and people feel more 2009 than this. We all knew these guys and the problem is they're also still out there in 2024.

Sasquatch Sunset (dir. David Zellner and Nathan Zellner) - Following four nomadic Sasquatch exploring, foraging, wandering, shitting and vomiting in Northern California. We all just want to make it out there in a dangerous world.

The Substance (dir. Coralie Fargeat) - My favorite film of 2024. Demi Moore should be nominated for an Oscar no doubt. This is as close as we'll ever get to having a body horror movie crack the mainstream zeitgeist. It's worth the praise though and you need to see it.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (dir. George Miller) - I'll never understand the underperformance at the box office, but the trailers didn't do it a lot of justice. It really is a worthy addition to the Mad Max world, which has been an obsession of mine since I was like eight years old so I'm well versed. The War Rig sequence is a stand out and when those Mortiflyers hit the air, oh man it's one of the great moments in 2024 cinema.

The People's Joker (dir. Vera Drew) - There's not a lot out there quite like this and for it's presentation and unique framework alone you should check it out. It may encapsulate the millennial meme-generation better than most anything. Technically this is from 2022 but was not released until 2024 due to copyright issues.

This Shit Rules

The Onion buying INFOwars - Although this remains a bit in limbo, it is still hilarious and hopefully the all powerful dorks don't stop this from happening.

CEOs - It's a me, LUIGI.

This Shit Sucks

Apple Vision Pro - Nobody wanted this Apple. Just completely misguided from the jump. You can excuse the "Pro-ness" of it all you like but you can buy headsets that hit the same main usability points (and more!) for like $300.

Raygun (Olympics) - Honestly this could have gone in the This Shit Rules category as well. But in the end, there is no world in which this is a world class athlete, which the Olympics typically have a good track record for. If it were me I'd be so embarssed I'd probably go live in the center of the earth after this. Perhaps one of the greatest performance art pieces of all time?

Humane Pin / Rabbit R1 - I called both of these devices being dead on arrival to anyone that would listen. This AI hardware garbage needs to be called out as such. It's being sold as the future - when in reality it is trash covered in a thin veneer of private equity hypecycle.

Ignore me all over the internet

Thanks for reading. Until next year.
